Forth Road Bridge Cable Inspection Gantries

The main suspension cables of the Forth Road Bridge were re-inspected during 2012 following an initial inspection carried out in 2004 and subsequent installation of a dehumidification system to halt the corrosion of the internal steel cables.

The initial inspections were carried out from bespoke high level access gantries. In the original inspection these gantries were designed to be used at specific locations on the bridge and have now been modified to allow them to be used at different locations, particularly at the highest positions adjacent to the main towers. Due to the steeper angle of the cable near to the towers the gantries were made longer to the cover the distance between the cable hangers.

Eadon Consulting carried out the design modification, calculations to confirm the modifications and mechanisms, and detailed fabrication drawings on behalf of the main contractor, The Spencer Group.
