Bradley Swing Bridge

This project involved replacing an existing 20m long, single carriageway swing bridge that crosses the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The existing bridge was supported and balanced purely on the pintle. As a vehicle crossed the bridge the weight distribution would become unstable and the bridge nose and tail would slam against the abutments.

David Price designed the mechanical operating equipment for this bridge, which is of the horizontal swing pattern, rotating on a pintle bearing and tail wheels, whilst working for Mandall Engineering Ltd. It opens and closes by a pinion gear, driven by a hydraulic motor and a curved rack.

The bridge was improved by the addition of a fully automatic system that opens and closes the bridge and also wedges the bridge, making it stable during traffic use.
