Poole Harbour Second Crossing Twin Sails Bridge

The exemplar mechanical, electrical, control and hydraulic design and specification of the Poole Harbour Second Crossing was carried out by M G Bennett and Associates Ltd. Whilst employed by Bennetts, Michael Thorogood was responsible for the detailed exemplar design and specification of the mechanical, electrical, control and hydraulic elements.

In 2002, a competition was held to find a design for a new crossing to form the basis of the regeneration of brown field land previously the site of a power station. The other members of the design team were the structural consultant Gifford LLP and the architect Wilkinson Eyre. The brief for the competition was to provide a landmark bridge with an opening span that would form the catalyst for the regeneration of the surrounding area.

The winning design that the team submitted consists of a twin bascule span cut diagonally to form two 37m long triangular decks when in the raised position.

The work carried out on the project consisted of liaising with the end client, the Borough of Poole, to ensure their requirements were met. This also included the integration of mechanical, electrical, control and hydraulic equipment into the bridge structure whilst maintaining the architectural intent.

Key considerations during the design stage were:

  • Reliability
  • Maintainability
  • Simplicity
  • Budget
