A bridge in paradise

07/10/2018

Beautiful beaches, palms and outstanding sunsets…the perfect location for a new bascule bridge!

Here at Eadon we are really thrilled to work on such a project in Bermuda. The new movable bridge will replace the current bridge that connects the L. F. Wade International Airport with the town of St. Georges to the east.

The adventure started in December 2017 when we teamed up with Ramboll and Knight Architects to look at two bridges. Eadon Consulting’s role is as the lead mechanical, electrical and hydraulic designers. Starting from a blank sheet of paper the team has worked through a feasibility options study considering both fixed and moving bridges for two locations on the island. From the initial study it was concluded that only St. George’s Bridge needed to move. Further studies and design development was carried out and the findings presented to the Bermuda Government. The selected solution with its distinct shape and colours captures the soul of the island. After a public consultation on the 26th of September, the design has been approved and we are looking forward to moving the project through to the final detailed design and on to site.

The stunning bascule bridge is an elongated shell structure made of steel. The bridge will rotate around two horizontal pivot bearings, located within the deck cross section. The deck is being lifted by a pair of hydraulic cylinders, located between the bearings on a bespoke pier.

Eadon Consulting has already a wide range of distinct movable bridges on its CV and it is looking forward to adding the Bermuda bascule bridge to the list.
