Eadon Welcomes Chaya Kelly for Summer Placement

At Eadon, we offer undergraduates who are keen to gain real-world experience before graduating the opportunity to undertake a 6-week placement. This summer, we’re excited to welcome Chaya Kelly, a mechanical engineering student from the University of Sheffield, who is spending his summer with our team gaining valuable hands-on experience.

“Getting some practical experience before you graduate is really useful because it gives you a good idea of what it’s like to work in an environment like this,” says Chaya. “It’s very different from university, which is mainly theory.”

Tasked with researching and contributing to the development of a long-reach robotic arm for our innovative REACH project, Chaya has been immersed from the start. “I didn’t really expect to get a chance to do this sort of thing, but it’s been great,” he said. “It’s been particularly useful to use CAD (Computer-Aided Design) at Eadon because at university, it’s been on a more basic level. Whereas when you’re actually printing it, it needs to be perfect. So I developed those skills quite quickly.”

The supportive team environment has been a highlight for Chaya. “At the start, you get a buddy who you shadow for the first week or so. You also get assigned a development coach who you meet with from time to time to discuss your progress and next steps. Everyone’s been really friendly and welcoming, and I feel very comfortable asking questions or for help.”

“For any students considering a summer placement, I would definitely say do it. It’s really good to get a grasp of whether or not you’re going to like working in the industry, and it helps you narrow down your interests. I think doing this placement is going to make me feel more prepared as I go into my final year at university.”
