Last week, two members of the Eadon team got stuck in volunteering at a Careers and Arts Fair for Year 5 pupils from local primary schools. The event was held at Cockermouth Secondary School and organised by the Centre for Leadership Performance (CforLP). 

The day was a great mix – pupils split their time between getting creative and learning about future careers in Cumbria, with a real variety of organisations there, from the NHS to engineering companies. 

At the Eadon stand, Tom Kett and Mike Thorogood showed pupils what engineering means in everyday life. They explained how many objects around us depend on engineering. Using our 3D printer, they brought hands-on mechanisms for the children to explore, then challenged them to find the same mechanisms in a giant LEGO bucket-wheel excavator. 

“The children were really engaged and loved exploring the 3D printed mechanisms, then trying to figure out where they appear in everyday objects,” said Tom. “The excavator was a clear highlight. Pupils fed in LEGO “rocks” and watched how different mechanisms worked together to move them through the machine. 

“It was great fun seeing the children get stuck in. Being able to use the 3D printer meant there was enough for everyone to get involved straight away.” 

We’re especially proud that when organisers asked pupils about their favourite activity of the day, the Eadon stand was their top choice!
