Te Matau a Pohe Bridge named as ‘one of top 15 most incredible walkable bridges in the world’

24/02/2022

Eadon are delighted that the Te Matau a Pohe Bridge has been named as one of the top 15 most incredible walkable bridges in the world by Fodor’s Travel this week.

The Te Matau a Pohe Rolling Bascule bridge, formally known as Lower Hatea River crossing, is a lift bridge located within the city of Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand. The crossing provides an alternative option for traffic travelling around the city, helping to ease congestion. The bridge is the only operational one of its kind in New Zealand and one of a very few for road traffic in the world.

Working alongside Peters and Cheung and Knight Architects, Eadon played a key role in this project – providing support from the first client meeting at tender stage through initial concept and options studies, detailed design of the operating equipment and mechanical element, works and site visits and on to final client handover.

It sits on the list alongside other world-famous bridges such as San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, New York’s Brooklyn Bridge and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. To see Fodor’s article with the full list click here.
