Bell’s Place Lift Bridge

Eadon was appointed by Amey to carry out a mechanical and electrical inspection of Bell’s Place Lift Bridge, a pedestrian bridge over the Water of Leith in Edinburgh, as part of its six-yearly principal inspection.

Key facts

Location

Bell’s Place, Edinburgh

Client

The City of Edinburgh Council

Although modest in size, the bridge features an unusual vertical lifting mechanism. Instead of rotating upwards like a conventional lift bridge, the entire deck is raised vertically between four reinforced concrete pilasters using steel cables, pulleys and winding equipment. Internal guide rails in the pilasters ensure the deck remains level and aligned throughout its movement.

The bridge is designed to be lifted during periods of flooding, allowing water to pass freely beneath. Although it was originally designed to be operated by hand, an electric motor was later added to make raising the bridge quicker and more practical.

Working alongside Amey, who carried out the structural assessment on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council, Eadon completed a detailed inspection of the bridge’s mechanical and electrical systems. The inspection found that the lifting equipment was in good working condition and no significant repairs were required.
