The requirement was to perform a Category Ⅲ Check to ensure adequacy of the existing structure and mechanical equipment against the increased loading following fitment of an 1m extension to the walkway. This work included verification of hydraulic cylinders and bearing pins. The task was performed using STAAD Pro analysis software to determine the global behaviour of the structure, and hand calculations for the individual components. All checks were conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Eurocodes and other relevant standards including: BS 6349 – Maritime Structures; BS 5400 – Steel, Concrete and Composite; BS EN 13001 – Cranes, General Design.

Salient aspects included the moving nature of the walkway, and determination of the loads applied by the ship. Significant attention was paid to the detailing of the walkway as the structure consisted of original, modified and newly proposed elements, with information collated from multiple sources. The work performed by Eadon ensures that all statutory requirements are met, and that the structure will remain safe and operational long into the future.
