St. George’s Bridge, Bermuda
St. George’s Bridge is a hydraulically operated lift bridge that will replace an existing swing bridge at its current location near Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport. Originally built in 1964, the existing swing bridge has undergone multiple repairs in recent years. However, now nearing the end of its life, it is stuck in a fixed position, preventing shipping access to the harbor.

Commissioned by the Government of Bermuda, the replacement bridge will serve as both a distinctive landmark and a key gateway, providing a vital connection between St. George’s and the main island, St. David’s. Designed with aesthetics in mind, its distinctive curved deck structure creates a striking first impression for visitors arriving by air. Another of the project’s objectives was to contribute to local skill development, ensuring that the bridge’s construction and future maintenance would benefit the Bermudian workforce.
Eadon was commissioned by Ramboll UK to collaborate with Knight Architects in developing the replacement bridge. Following evaluation, a hydraulically operated lift bridge was selected as the most suitable solution. Eadon played a key role in the detailed design of the bridge’s mechanical equipment, including the specification of the electrical and hydraulic equipment.

Given Bermuda’s international setting, the project required a mix of European mechanical design standards and American electrical codes. While construction has yet to begin due to factors such as COVID-related delays, the detailed design has been completed and independently verified. The project now awaits client approval and funding allocation before proceeding to fabrication and installation.
